Can you help me?

My father, a professor of medieval history at Fordebridge University, has disappeared. I am very worried. He visited me in Vienna a few weeks ago and was really quite agitated about this journal he had – he carried it everywhere with him, and now he’s sent it to me. I have also received some phone calls threatening him. He wouldn’t tell me what he was researching, but the calls referred to the fact that he should stop what he was doing. The calls stopped, but now he’s gone missing.

The police are trying to help but progress is slow. Please don’t tell anyone but I managed to get hold of the crime scene report – I’ll tell you how later, if I can trust you. I can trust you, can’t I? I am sure the report contains clues about my father’s disappearance, but I need your help if I am to get further.

I also have some images of my father’s study that may contain some clues. If you want them as well I can send them to you. You will help me, won’t you? My father loved codes, puzzles and cryptography, so I’m sure he will have hidden clues to what he was doing in his study. If you think you can help, then I’ll send you the journal.

If you can’t help, I understand, but if you know someone who can please ask them to get in touch. If you're still not sure check out the tour.

Please, I need your help. I’m sure my father is in danger.

Ms. Richleau;
As one whose avocation is in the ratiocinationary arts, I am offering my services to your cause. I hope that our efforts - along with all the other myriad seekers enlisted to enjoin us on this hunt - will be able to find your father in good stead. I have taken the liberty of looking through the materials of your father's study - what we in the US would refer to as a 'den'. It appears that he has left messages exclusively for your eyes.

These messages are encoded using techniques and lore that I am assuming are unique to your relationship with your father but that may be accessible to others of us as we attain that knowledge over time. I have been able to decipher some at this time, (others I've yet to resolve) and am finding a way to coalesce this knowledge into a meaningful pattern that leads us to a benevolent resolution.

I do find it odd that your father has used some artifacts of interest to modern cryptography such as the Zodiac cipher - which if he has solved and/or if it is used as a solution to this case - indicates a particular knowledge of matters beyond the scope of this jurisdiction - but perhaps those are elements of the proverbial red herringbone soup of which we in the ratiocination business so frequently sup.

We shall help you, my young friend. In the end, all shall have meaning...
